Maruti Suzuki Swift Vs Hyundai Grand i10

Maruti Suzuki Swift Vs Hyundai Grand i10
Maruti Suzuki Swift Vs Hyundai Grand i10: Styling
Maruti Suzuki Swift offers a European design which is compact and gives this vehicle a unique look. With its initial launch the company created a revolution in the small car market and later on in 2011 with the launch of the new car with refreshed interior and some tweaks on the outside Swift was able to get back to the spot it created in the Indian automobile market.

There was a time when the company had to increase the production of this car in order to meet its increasing requirements. There is no need of a description about the design of Swift as it is one of the country’s best selling hatchbacks. It has got a very compact design with sufficient spacing but, the back seat of the hatch feels a little congested for three adult passengers.

Hyundai launched the Grand i10 as a new product in the company’s hatchback line-up. The company has managed to fit the best in class interior and features to such a small and compact designed car. It looks completely new and different from the company’s older model i10, it has got an entirely new front fascia with bigger head lamps and a single chrome grille. The side profile looks compact and resembles to that of i10. While the rear has a completely new tail gate and newly designed tail lamps. It is clearly evident that the Swift is bigger in size than Grand i10 but in terms of interior space and back seat comfort, Grand i10 is the better one out of the two. Maruti Suzuki Swift Vs Hyundai Grand i10: Engine and Specifications
Maruti offers both petrol and diesel engine options for the Swift. The petrol variant runs on a 1.2Litre K-series engine that churns out 84bhp of power and a peak torque of 115Nm where as the diesel variant is ftted with tried and tested 1.3Litre DDiS diesel engine which produces a maximum power output of 74bhp along with a peak torque of 190Nm. Both these engines are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Maruti Swift is a fun to drive car, thanks to its light weight body and rigid design. It feels powerful and delivers best in class driving experience for a hatchback. The steering is also noticeably light which makes it easy handle and more convenient to get around in traffic.

Hyundai Grand i10 is also available in both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol variant is powered by a 1.2Litre Kappa engine that gives out 82bhp of power and 114Nm of torque while the diesel variant runs on the 1.3Litre CRDi engine that churns out a power of 70bhp along with a peak torque of 160Nm. Both the engines are having a 5-speed manual transmission on board while there is an automatic transmission on offer only in the Asta Petrol variant. According to the above mentioned figures, the Grand i10 seems to be a bit short on power in comparison to the Swift, its driving still remains quite impressive especially during city driving conditions. One of the plus points of Grand i10 over Swift is its suspension system; it is with no doubt one of the best in the segment.

Verdict
On one side you have a classic hatchback which has transformed the segment to what it is currently and on the other side you have a new rebel which is creating quite a large fan following for itself. Differentiating them solely on the basis of pricing (Swift starting from INR 4.8 Lakhs and Grand i10 at INR 4.9 Lakhs - ex showroom Delhi) and fuel efficiency cannot help one arrive to a conclusion. Instead what needs to be taken into account are your own requirements which can be realized once you have surveyed and driven the car on your own to arrive at the conclusion. Rest we prefer the Hyundai Grand i10 over Maruti Swift simply due to its more recent design, feature loaded interiors and reasonably performance oriented power train.

When we take a look at the Indian automobile market as a whole, the first thing that comes to our mind is the number of hatchbacks that are currently being sold in the country. Maruti made a huge impact in the small car segment by launching the Swift (back in 2007) and yet it remains the company's most popular selling model in the country.
