Maruti Ignis Rivals

Upon its launch in India, the Maruti Suzuki Ignis will take on against the Mahindra KUV100 which currently is among the most affordable sub-4 metre compact SUVs in the country.

Maruti Ignis rear profiel Maruti Suzuki Ignis is built on Suzuki’s new-generation platform that also underpins the Baleno.

Maruti Ignis – Exterior

The production-ready version of the Maruti Ignis will look largely similar to its concept, which had made its India debut at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo. Though, its styling could be tonned down a bit. Similar to Japanese-spec model, the India-bound version could be offered in a total of 6 variants across 3 trim levels – MG, MX and MZ. Based on Suzuki’s new-generation platform, the Maruti Ignis is claimed to be lighter and more robust than the existing Maruti cars. It’s the same platform that is used for the Maruti Suzuki Baleno premium hatchback.

The production version of the car borrows its design elements from its concept such as neatly chromed front fascia, chunky styling with flared wheel arches and jeweled headlamps. The vehicle also features a clam-shell bonnet, and projector headlamps instead of LED units. The side profile is managed by blacked out A and B pillars, power-foldable and adjustable ORVMs, pull-style door handles instead flush units, and a pair of 10-spoke, 16-inch aluminum wheels with 175/60 tyres.

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis also borrows some design elements from the WagonrR such as tallboy design and high ground clearance.

On contrary, the rear end of the vehicle looks quite simple with conventional bumper with black insert, tailgate mounted spoiler, turn indicators and a rear windscreen wiper. Moving to dimensions, the Maruti Ignis measures 3,700mm long, 1,660mm wide and 1,595mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,435mm. A ground clearance of 180mm not gives it a crossover-ish stance, but will help it handle roads quite well. The top-end model with 2WD drivetrain system carries a kerb weight of 880kg, while the AWD variant weighs 920kg. The India-bound model will come with a choice of 8 different exterior colours.

Maruti Ignis – Interior

From inside, the Maruti Ignis compact SUV looks quite sporty. The car gets a dual-tone interior theme with a dashboard with integrated touchscreen display and sporty orange highlights here and there. Similar to the Baleno and Vitara Brezza, the top-end model of the mini crossover might be equipped with a SmartPlay system with Apple Carplay. What further enhance its comfort and convenience levels are Bluetooth-enabled audio system, automatic climate control, regenerative braking, heated front seats and keyless entry with engine starter button.

Maruti Ignis steering The Maruti Ignis looks quite sporty and premium from inside.

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis will also come with multiple customization options including all-black and dual-tone (white & black) interior theme, optional orange and silver interior accents, etc.

With a 5-seat configuration, the Maruti Ignis is expected to offer decent legroom for the front and rear seat passengers. The foldable rear seats can be adjusted for 165mm extra legroom. The vehicle has a boot capacity of 258-litres that can be extended up to 415-litres. The safety aspects are taken care of by dual front, side and curtain airbags, ABS (anti-lock braking system), EBD (electronic brake-force distribution), ESP (electronic stability programme), hill descent control, hill-hold, lane departure warning, LED headlights and fog lamps, and automatic headlights with automatic leveling. This mini SUV offers multiple storage areas for bottles, cell phones, etc.

Maruti Ignis side profile The Maruti Suzuki Ignis might be offered with two diesel engine options – a 70bhp, 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder and a 90bhp, 1.5-litre.

Maruti Ignis – Engine & Transmission

In the Japanese market, the Suzuki Ignis is being offered with a 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol with the SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) mild hybrid system. This gasoline unit churns out a maximum power of 89.75bhp and 120Nm of peak torque. The same engine with ISG (Idle Stop & Go) system offers additional 3.08bhp and 50Nm. The 2WD (two-wheel drive) system comes as standard across all trims, while Suzuki’s All Grip 4WD (four-wheel drive) system is an optional offering. This powertrain is coupled to a CVT gearbox that helps the car return an impressive mileage of 28kmpl (for the 2WD) and 15.4kmpl (for the AWD).

The Indo-Japanese carmaker is working on a new 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder diesel engine that might debut on the India-bound Ignis. This oil burner will be capable to deliver power close to 70bhp. For the Indian market, a 90bhp, 1.5-litre diesel engine is also on cards. Suzuki claims that the redesigned underbody structure and optimized design will enhance fuel efficiency, handling and stability of the car. This technology will also improve its NVH levels.
