ZTE's new VR headset comes with Google Daydream support
The features of the headset include a 9-axis gyroscope for enhanced motion tracking, a touch-control pad that can be used to swipe and navigate around, a single action button and a volume rocker.
There's a five-piece glass configuration and a focus wheel to boot, with a viewing angle of 96 degrees and a delay of 18 milliseconds.
ZTE's VR headset brings to the table integrated sensor hardware and support for Google's Daydream platform for virtual reality - making this headset the first one in the world to be compatible with the platform. With the dedicated hardware, it's a given that ZTE's VR headset is more of a Samsung Gear VR than a Google Cardboard.
The headset has also been claimed by the company to be capable of supporting Google's Daydream platform, but there are some doubts on this front, since details of the Daydream platform itself are shrouded in mystery at this juncture. The Axon 7 (and ergo, the VR headset) is stated to launch shortly, and the Daydream platform rolling out later this year.
ZTE's VR headset (compatible only with the Axon 7) is the latest in a trend of phone-and-VR bundle, with Huawei's headset for the P9, LG's VR headset for the G5, AntVR headset for the Lenovo K4 Note (review) and the Gear VR headset for Samsung phones giving company. The next phone expected to follow this trend will be the OnePlus 3.
"The headset could be the first to support Google's new VR platform"
ZTE's latest phone to roll off the assembly line came in the form of the Axon 7 - a formidable flagship that boasts RAM of up to 6GB and a Snapdragon 820 humming under the hood. While the Axon 7 was the primary headliner, the company had a VR headset to accompany the phone as well.
