Xiaomi and Microsoft strike patent licensing agreement; Xiaomi devices to come pre-installed with Office and Skype

Xiaomi and Microsoft have signed a new deal that will see the brands cross-license patents. As part of the deal, Xiaomi is Microsoft bought 1,500 patents, and will be pre-loading Microsoft Office and Skype applications on its Android-powered smartphones and tablets.
Starting September 2016, Xiaomi Android devices, including the Mi 5, My Max, I 4S, Redmi Note 3 and Redmi 3 smartphones will come pre-loaded with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Skype apps. The new partnership builds on the two vendors' previous collaborations, which is a Windows 10 Write on my pad, and the use of Microsoft Azure to power Xiaomi's Mi cloud services.

"We are excited to be working closely with Microsoft on a broad partnership of cooperation. As demonstrated by this agreement with Microsoft, Xiaomi is looking to build a sustainable, long-term partnerships with global technology leaders, with the ultimate goal of bringing the best user experience to be my fans, "said Xiaomi in a release.

Commenting on the partnership, Microsoft said, "People want their favorite apps and experience to work seamlessly on the device of their choice, and that is exactly what this partnership offers."

Xiaomi said pre-loading of Microsoft applications on its smartphones and tablets will vary by device, stores and mobile operators. As part of the new deal, the Redmond-based software giant has sold Xiaomi around 1,500 patents that cover a variety of technologies including wireless communications, video, multimedia and cloud.
